Irregular Bleeding Q & A

When is menstrual bleeding considered irregular bleeding?

A normal menstrual cycle is 24-38 days, with bleeding that lasts no longer than eight days. Your menstrual bleeding may be considered irregular if it falls out of the normal parameters.

Irregular bleeding may include:

  • Bleeding between your periods
  • Bleeding after intercourse
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Bleeding longer than eight days
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Menstrual cycle that is shorter than 24 days or longer than 38 days

Irregular bleeding may occur at any age. If you’re experiencing irregular bleeding, contact Hany H Ahmed, MD to schedule an evaluation.

What causes irregular bleeding?

Irregular bleeding may develop from many causes. Some of the most common include:

  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Miscarriage
  • Fibroids
  • Polyps
  • Endometriosis
  • Problems with ovulation
  • Gynecological cancer

Women may also experience irregular bleeding as a side effect of certain types of contraception, such as the intrauterine device (IUD).

What can I expect during an evaluation for irregular bleeding?

You can expect a comprehensive evaluation when you come to see Dr. Ahmed due to concerns with irregular bleeding. The goal of your evaluation is to identify the underlying cause so you can get the most effective treatment.

During your evaluation, Dr. Ahmed asks detailed questions about your symptoms, gynecological and medical history, and sexual history. He performs a physical and pelvic exam and may request diagnostic tests, such as:

  • Hormone level check
  • Testing for STDs
  • Ultrasound
  • Pap smear
  • MRI
  • Hysteroscopy
  • CT scan

Dr. Ahmed may also perform a diagnostic laparoscopy to determine the underlying cause of your irregular bleeding.

During the minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Ahmed uses a laparoscope he inserts through a small incision in your abdomen to evaluate your reproductive organs. If abnormalities are found, he may perform any necessary procedure to improve your irregular bleeding.

How is irregular bleeding treated?

Treatment for your irregular bleeding is individualized based on the underlying cause. Dr. Ahmed reviews the details of your diagnosis and your treatment options with you so you can make the most informed decision about how best to proceed.

Treatment for irregular bleeding may include:

  • Hormonal birth control
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • IUDs
  • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist
  • Antibiotics

In some cases, Dr. Ahmed may suggest a surgical procedure such as endometrial ablation for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding or minimally invasive surgery to remove fibroids or polyps.
